Waco Residents Unite Through Community Fitness Challenges
Waco residents are signing up for group exercise events that turn individual workouts into shared neighborhood goals.
How we reported this

More than 180 people registered by July 8 for the upcoming Cameron Park Trail Challenge set for July 26 in Waco.
The event comes as summer temperatures climb and residents look for structured ways to stay active outside alone. Local wellness groups report rising interest in team-based formats that set collective distance or repetition targets rather than solo benchmarks.
Events anchored at Cameron Park and the Waco Family YMCA
Organizers at the Waco Parks and Recreation Department chose the east bank trails in Cameron Park for the July 26 challenge because the 4.2-mile loop offers shade and water stations every half mile. The Waco Family YMCA on Franklin Avenue will host a companion indoor circuit on July 30 that mirrors the same point system used outdoors.
Both locations already run weekly group classes that feed directly into these challenges. Cameron Park hosts a Tuesday evening run club that starts at 6:15 from the picnic shelter near the Suspension Bridge. The YMCA offers a Thursday strength circuit at 5:45 that uses the same scoring sheet participants will carry during the July events.
Numbers show steady local growth
City records list 312 participants across four fitness challenges held between January and June this year. The average entry fee has held at $12, with proceeds covering timing chips and post-event fruit and water. YMCA membership data shows a 14 percent increase in new group-class sign-ups from the same six-month period in 2025.
Participants track points through a free app that logs miles or reps completed with a partner. Teams of three or four residents from the same zip code compete for a simple trophy and a mention on the parks department website.
Registration for the July 26 Cameron Park event remains open through the Waco Parks website until July 22. Residents can also sign up in person at the YMCA front desk on Franklin Avenue during regular business hours.
